Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang

From "Zang Fu Syndromes," by McDonald and Penner

English: Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction

Also known as: Ginseng and Astragalus Combination or Decoction for Reinforcing the Center and Replenishing Qi

Ingredients
    Latin Pinyin Dosage Actions
    Rx. Astragali Huang Qi 4-24g Strongly tonifies Qi, strengthens SP and raises SP Yang.

    With Ren Shen, for Qi Xu with general debility, anorexia and spontaneous perspiration.

    With Bai Zhu, for SP Qi Xu with weakness, lassitude and loose stools.

    Rx. Ginseng Ren Shen 4-12g Strongly tonifies Qi, reinforces Yang and harmonizes MJ.

    With Bai Zhu and Zhi Gan Cao, assists Huang Qi in strengthening Qi.

    (Rx. Codonopsis) (Dang Shen) (8-30g) (Substitute for Ren Shen.)
    Rz. Atractylodis Albae Bai Zhu 4-12g Strengthens SP and dries Dampness.

     

    Rx. Glycyrrhizae (fried) Zhi Gan Cao 1-6g Tonifies SP and harmonizes.
    Rx. Angelicae Sinensis Dang Gui 3-12g Tonifies Qi of Blood and invigorates and harmonizes Blood.

    With Huang Qi, Ren Shen, Bai Zhu and Zhi Gan Cao, augments Qi by Invigorating Blood.

    Per. Citri Reticulatae Chen Pi 2-9g Regulates Qi, tonifies SP, assists raising Qi, aids digestion of tonics and prevents bloating which may accompany Qi tonics.
    Rx. Cimicifugae Sheng Ma 1-6g Raises Yang, raises sunken Qi and guides other herbs upwards.

    With Chai Hu and Huang Qi, raises Sunken Yang.

    Rx. Bupleuri Chai Hu 2-9g Raises Yang Qi and relieves stagnation.
    (Rz. Zingiberis Recens) (Sheng Jiang) (2-6g) (Variation of formula - with Da Zao, harmonizes and protects SP / ST.)
    (Fr. Zizyphi Jujube) (Da Zao) (2-6g) (Variation of formula.)
