Clinical Insights from a Senior Herbalist
a) TCM Pediatrics for Common Respiratory and
Gastrointestinal Disorders
b) Diagnosis and Treatment of Leaky Gut Syndrome
– in Orlando, FL
with Jake Fratkin, OMD
Saturday, May 10, 2008
8:30AM – 5:00PM
Location:
Embassy Suites Orlando-International Drive
8978 International Drive
Orlando, FL 32819
(407) 352-1400
7 CEUs
In the morning workshop, we
will look at common disorders in infants,
toddlers, school age children, and adolescents.
These include the digestive disorders of
nausea-vomiting, epigastric and abdominal pain,
stomach flu, food poisoning, and colic; and the
respiratory disorders of cold, sore throat,
cough, and ear infections. Special attention
will be given to TCM diagnostics and physiology
of small children, practical tips for compliance
of herbal medicines, and management of
dysfunctional parent-child relationships. Herbal
therapies are also applicable for adults.
Leaky Gut Syndrome is a
chronic small intestine colitis initiated by
antibiotics or early vaccination. Allowing
absorption of metabolic wastes and poisons, it
can be the root cause of asthma, food or pollen
allergies, eczema, adrenal fatigue, and
fibromyalgia. Because of the modern appearance
of this syndrome, TCM has not given it much
attention compared with the clinical
investigation within Functional Medicine. In
this workshop, we will discuss modern diagnostic
tests, the physiology and pathology of LGS, and
how to manage LGS within a TCM organization.
This is the fourth lecture
series Jake Paul Fratkin, OMD, L.Ac. has taught
for Golden Flower. He has proven to be one of
our most popular lecturers, combining his
clinical knowledge in Chinese herbal medicine
with the modern contributions of Functional
Medicine. He has focused on Leaky Gut Syndrome
and its relation to chronic disease for over 15
years for both children and adults. His
specialty in pediatrics is well known (he is a
member of the Holistic Pediatric Association),
and he sees this workshop as an opportunity to
bring TCM practitioners more into family
practice, and to address some serious pediatric
conditions that defy Western medical
interventions.

An Introduction to Waike: Expelling External
Pathogens to Treat Limitations of Movement
– in Albuquerque, New Mexico with Steven Alpern,
L.Ac. (DAY 1)
Saturday, June 7, 2008
8:30AM – 5:00PM
Location:
Golden Flower Chinese Herbs Education Center
2724 Vassar PL NE
Albuquerque, NM 87107
7 CEUs
This course will focus
specifically on treating people with ailments
affecting musculo-skeletal movement with
internal (ingested herbal) formulas, as a
“sub-specialty” of the Waike (External Medicine)
Specialty. It will present the classical roots
of the theory of Waike, and we’ll discuss how to
implement that theory in devising custom herbal
formulas for patients with ailments that
challenge physical movement.
The Waike Specialty can have
application for patients with a wide variety of
conditions and diseases. In modern terms, this
includes a wide range of orthopedic ailments,
which can be acute, sub-acute, or chronic
(tendonitis, bursitis, disc lesions, etc.), or
degenerative ones like arthritis. Many of these
patients may have neurological complications,
such as radiculopathy or entrapment. Other
patients with chronic or degenerative
neurological ailments, such as CP, MS, or
Parkinson’s can also be treated using the Waike
Specialty with slight modifications to account
for the internal penetration of pathogenic
factors.
Cost:
Early registration: $100.00 (14 calendar days
prior to each seminar).
Registration: $125.00 (less than 14 days in
advance).

The Classical Art of Changweike: Generating
Post-natal Qi (Digestion Specialty) – in
Albuquerque, New Mexico with Steven Alpern, L.Ac. (DAY
2)
Sunday, June 8, 2008
8:30AM – 5:00PM
Location:
Golden Flower Chinese Herbs Education Center
2724 Vassar PL NE
Albuquerque, NM 87107
7 CEUs
The process of digestion has
long been central to Chinese medicine. Li
Dongyuan (1180-1251) originated an entire
tradition devoted to cultivating Earth, and the
Imperial Academy of Medicine organized a
specialty among its departments focused on
digestion.
This seminar will discuss how digestive
dysfunction can lead to diseases of many
physical systems. It will focus on
differentiating distress in the many functions
that affect digestion and the production of qi
and blood. We will discuss herbs and formulation
strategies to support each of these functions.
Since individuals digest both physical input
(food and drink) and experiential input (sense
data, leading to emotional reactions to
experience), the Digestion Specialty offers
particular insights into the rich relationship
between one’s emotions and food choices.
Addictions are treated as food stagnations, with
emphasis on blood (emotional) stagnation.
Healing engages the process of re-examining and
re-digesting one’s life and letting go of
whatever is entangling the spirit and
consequently, congesting the flow of qi.
Cost:
Early registration: $100.00 (14 calendar days
prior to each seminar).
Registration: $125.00 (less than 14 days in
advance).
