Treating
Chronic Open-Angle Glaucoma with Acupuncture &
Chinese Medicine
By
Andy Rosenfarb, MTOM, Dipl. Ac., Dipl. C.H.
Over the last 10 years,
in my practice I have specialized in TCM Ophthalmology. I have made
quite a few significant clinical observations through diagnostic
testing, treatment and direct feedback from my patients. In my clinical
practice, I incorporate TCM with nutrition and “functional medicine.”
Functional medicine uses methods to measure how weak (yin) or stressed
(yang) the body’s organs, glands, and systems may be. Among these
include blood sugar, adrenals, thyroid, pituitary, oxidation, hydration,
ATP-energy production, etc. Both TCM and functional medicine look to
uncover patterns of disharmony. The idea is to relate the patients
symptoms (glaucoma in this case), to the underlying disease pattern.

Hay Fever
It
is springtime! A time of growth in nature and a time of irritation is in
store for many people. This irritation usually begins at our nose and
can travel in eight directions (east, west, south, north, in, out, up
and down) to cause itchy eyes, sinusitis, headaches, sore throat, ear
congestion, dizziness and infections.
Hay fever is a hypersensitivity reaction of
our immunity to air-borne substances such as pollens, dust, dust mites,
fur, animal dandruff, feathers, spores, molds, plants and chemicals.

TCM and Smoking
By Wing-benn Deng, BS, MATCM, PhD, Dipl Ac & CH (NCCAOM),
L.Ac.
Our
bodies are what we can call a microcosm. Let's use the earth as an example of a
macrocosm. As a comparison to the earth, smoking can be signified as the source
of air pollution to an individual, such as "smoke" in the air from exhaust from
cars, factories, etc. Trees are signified as the "Lungs" of the earth, which
purify the air. Now, when someone is smoking, the internal body is occupied by
the energy of the "smoke." Then the Lungs have to work harder to purify the body
system. When someone is addicted to cigarettes, the body cells and internal
organs are constantly living in a polluted environment.

ASK THE DOCTOR
Q:
I know all about the different problems caused by dampness but I am finding
it difficult to understand this term. Can you help? What I am interested in
is how dampness produces its various manifestations and why they occur. I
would be grateful for any insight you could give me.
A:
If you want the biomedical mechanisms, they are too numerous to really
define. But if you're okay with the
TCM explanation, I can take a shot
at it.
When the
digestion is inefficient for
whatever reason, it gives rise to a
substance in the body called
dampness. When a car's engine is not
efficient it gives off more exhaust
fumes, the combustion isn't so great
and so much of the unburned fuel is
expelled as fumes...
