Points - Ask the Doctor

Q: I am sometimes very constipated. I donít like taking chemical laxatives nor do I like taking the fiber stuff. Is there any alternative?

A: Constipation has many forms. There may be fecal impaction, difficulty defecating, lack of fluids, or other origins and causes. It would be a good idea to consult a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) doctor to determine the proper diagnosis.

For proper digestion, it is of paramount importance to eliminate stress, tension, spicy foods, fried foods, and too much meat. Also, maintain a minimum of 60 ounces of water intake each day.

Here are some remedies:

1. Eat one fresh apple on an empty stomach.

2. Eat lightly steamed asparagus and cabbage at night, one hour before bed. You can also try eating three dried prunes before bed.

3. Make beet soup or drink blended beets and cabbage juice before bed.

4. Mix crushed black sesame seeds with honey and make into a paste. Take one-tablespoon at morning and night with one glass of warm water.
