Points - Ask the Doctor

Q: I’ve tried acupressure on myself before but it didn’t work. Are there special techniques I need to know?

A:There aren’t many tips and techniques that you need to know to perform acupressure on yourself, but the ones I have to offer you are very important. Firstly, always make sure that you’re certain of the point that you are searching for. This is probably the problem that occurred for you initially. It’s important to know that each acupoint is only about 0.5 mm in diameter, so you need to be very precise.

When you are searching for a point, make sure that you are only using moderate pressure with your fingertips. If you press too hard and feel pain, it will be more difficult to locate the point, and it also won’t activate the point correctly. If you press down and do not feel any sensation, you should try another spot in that area with your fingertip until you feel a slight pressure or soreness.

It’s important to remember that each point needs to be pressed for 2-5 minutes to be effectively activated. Also, you might need to activate the point several times a day over the course of a few days to experience the results, so don’t give up if you don’t experience immediate relief! And lastly, I recommend that you remember to relax and focus on deep breathing throughout the entire process. This will help reduce tension and improve your circulation.
