Shan Zhu Yu - Remedy for Urinary Disorders
By Jaseng Center for Alternative Medicine
In today's high-stress society more and more people are experiencing urinary problems. One of the most common is a disorder in which inflammation in
the urinary tract causes people to urinate excessively. When people with this problem go to the hospital
for tests, many times no virus or other cause can be found.
Doctors of Oriental Medicine (OMDs) see this type of health problem as one arising from a lack of "chi," or life force energy. In Oriental medicine, good, strong urination is a sign of vitality and energy. Men generally start losing this energy in their late forties, while a woman's energy starts to fall off in her early forties. When chi begins to decline,
people may feel fatigue or experience cold hands and feet, as well as having difficulties urinating.
Some also say this translates into a decline in overall vigor and sexual ability.
To help people in this battle to stave off declining energy and frequent urination, OMDs frequently prescribe
the herb Shan Zhu Yu. This herb not only helps relieve one's fatigue, but also enhances the function of the
kidney, revitalizing and reinvigorating the body and mind.
However, it is not only the middle-aged that experience these problems. There are also a number of children who urinate excessively. Many of them end up wetting their beds in the middle of the night. OMDs believe this is caused by a dysfunction of the kidneys
and by a general lack of energy in the body. Shan Zhu Yu is also very good for children in this situation
as it works wonders in strengthening the bodily processes associated with urination.
Another cause of excessive urination, and in this case it is accompanied by extreme pain, is inflammation of the prostate, a gland near the bladder. Men affected with this
dysfunction may take an antibiotic to try to get rid of the problem. But in many cases the body is too
weak from a lack of energy to carry the medicine to the affected area, rendering the drug useless.
The herbal remedy Koreans call "bokbunja," the fruit of a berry that grows on mountains in Asia, is incredibly effective in supplementing the body with the water it needs after hard work or exercise. It is also good for the eyes and revitalizes the body. The Chinese characters that make up the name of this Oriental remedy, translated literally, mean "to upset or turn over a jar." And there is an old story that a long time ago, a man once
knocked over a bedpan with the force of his urine after eating a huge amount of bokbunja. The best remedy
for those who lack energy and who urinate excessively is an even mixture of Shan Zhu Yu and bokbunja.
Another very effective treatment for this kind of problem that OMDs prescribe is an abdominal massage.
To do the massage, rub the abdominal area very slowly with your hands for a few minutes and then gradually press harder
using your fingertips. Massage in a circular motion and then press your abdomen while rapidly moving your
fingers up and down and back and forth, almost causing the stomach to shake.
People with urinary disorders may also want to make it a rule to sleep with their hands on their
abdominal area, as it is believed that this causes chi energy in other parts of the body to gather
in the abdominal region.
