Grains

BARLEY

 

Nature: cooling

 

Actions: promotes diuresis, strengthens spleen,

         benefits gall bladder, clears heat,

         detoxifies

 

Conditions: edema, indigestion, diarrhea, jaundice,

            tumors

 

 

BROWN RICE

 

Nature: neutral

 

Actions: strengthens spleen, nourishes stomach,

           strengthens lungs, relieves irritability,

           astringes intestines.

 

Conditions: indigestion, diarrhea, vomiting,

            nausea, "summer heat" irritability.

 

BUCKWHEAT

 

Nature: neutral and sweet

 

Actions: descends qi, strengthens stomach, stops

                 dysentery,  lowers blood pressure, strengthens

              blood vessels

 

Conditions: chronic diarrhea, dysentery, spontaneous 

                        sweating, hypertension, skin lesion

 

CORNMEAL

 

Nature: neutral and sweet

 

Actions: tonify qi, strengthen the stomach and spleen,

                 benefit the heart, diuretic, stimulate the flow of bile

 

Conditions: weak digestion, heart disease, high blood

                        pressure, edema, gallstones

 

MILLET

 

Nature: cooling

 

Actions: stops vomiting, relieves diarrhea,

         consolidates or astringes the stomach and

         intestines, promotes urination, soothes

         morning sickness.

 

OATS

 

Nature: cooling

 

Actions: strengthens spleen, stops diarrhea, lowers

            blood pressure, aids spontaneous sweating.

 

Conditions: leucorrhea, hypertension, diarrhea,

            boils, carbuncles, erysipelas (similar

            to shingles although this appears on

            the lower limbs.

 

RYE

 

Nature: neutral and sweet

 

Actions: arrests perspiration due to weakness,

                strengthens stomach, fortifies qi

 

Conditions: fatigue, lethargy, night or day sweats due

                       to weakness, fetal retention (baby has died

                       but not yet expelled by mother)


WHEAT

Nature: cooling

 

Actions: tonifies chi, strengthens spleen, harmonizes

                 stomach, regulates chi, carminative, stops

                 lactation.       

                         

Conditions: lack of appetite, indigestion, abdominal

                       distention and fullness, dysentery, edema

 

WHEAT BRAN

 

Nature: slightly warm and sweet

 

Actions: calms the spirit, resolves dampness, moves stool

 

Conditions: agitation, swelling, high cholesterol, constipation

 

WHEAT GERM

 

Nature: warm and sweet

 

Actions: relieves restlessness, arrests diabetes

 

Conditions: emotional agitation, diabetes

 

WHITE RICE

 

Nature: slightly cool and sweet

 

Actions: moistens Yin, clears heat, diuretic, reduces swelling

 

Conditions: febrile diseases, swelling, vomiting of blood,

                       nosebleeds, nausea
