Holistic Approach with Spiritual Support Enhance People with HIV/AIDS

By Lee, Sunny T.C. Can-Integrated Healing Centre Inc.

[Th.D.5116] HOLISTIC APPROACH WITH SPIRITUAL SUPPORT ENHANCE PEOPLE WITH HIV/AIDS

Issue: People with HIV/AIDS can have their quality of life enhanced with acupuncture therapy, Chinese herbal remedies and spiritual support.

Project: An HIV/AIDS health support program targeting the specific use of acupuncture treatment, Chinese herbal remedies and holistic health consultation was initiated in Vancouver in August 1993. The program was an extension and modification in the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine for people with HIV/AIDS who had the experience of using such a therapy before. Strategies include one-to-one pulse diagnosis, tongue coating monitoring, individual health query and counseling, acupuncture treatment, (insertion of acupuncture needles and a brief energy massage) Chinese herbal remedies, and information giving specific diets and exercises, all in a group setting. Members were given discount fees due to their limitation of income.

Results: The HIV/AIDS life-quality support program has been very well accepted by the participants and the different HIV/AIDS support groups in Vancouver. In addition to the complementary medicine treatment, the gathering of a routine group of 10 - 12 people at a time and the opportunity for an individual to express his concerns and expectations built up a strong spiritual and hopeful support within the group.

Lesson Learned: A friendly and open treatment atmosphere is especially beneficial in encouraging a person to live on with hope.
