Acupuncture.com is a great example of a truly democratic Internet. Questions and
comments come in from seasoned veteran acupuncturists and the desperate patient,
those who hope that acupuncture can cure what Western Medicine hasn't. In between,
we've learned that there are those who have an interest in acupuncture but haven't taken
the leap into an acupuncture school or who have been treated but don't really know what
acupunture is or why their acupuncturist is doing what s/he is doing.. Many of us can
relate: We were all there once.
KAREsoft's Acupuncture Interactive Book is a clever and well-functioning book that fills
the need for those people who want to know a little yet don't know too much. Written by
Dr. Zhang Ahan-Hai, a relatively young doctor involved with research at the famed Beijing
Traditional Chinese Medicine University, the program effectively takes one through all the
basics of acupuncture from history to animations of cupping techniques.
Included are sections on:
- explanations of acupuncture points
- history of acupuncture
- demonstrations of techniques
- explanations of the different meridians and pathways
- extra points, ear and scalp acupuncture
- 101 Frequently Asked Questions
For the experienced acupuncturist the point section labeled "Gallery" is fun and provides
a kind of self quiz. Click on the points from a drawing and get the location and
indications. Because this inludes all the points it is a simple review to all those seldom
used and perhaps forgotten pints.
Students obviously can benefit from the program especially as a study guide to the points
and pathways.
The Acupuncture Interactive Book may be just the program for the technologically
advanced waiting room. Its information is enough to give an idea of the complexity of
Acupucnture while allowing un-schooled patients basic knowledge in an intelligent
manner. The program requires Windows 95 and is installed easily and runs equally
smoothly.
