English: Bolster the Spleen Decoction

Also known as: Magnolia and Atractylodis Combination or Spleen Reinforcing Cool Decoction






    Rx. Aconiti Praeparata

    Fu Zi


    Promotes movement of Yang through all twelve channels, tonifies Ming Men and disperses Cold.

    With Gan Jiang, warms and nourishes SP and KI.

    With Bai Zhu and Fu Ling, for KI and SP Yang Xu with water retention.

    With Bai Zhu and Gan Jiang, for SP Yang Xu with abdominal pain and Cold.

    Rz. Zingiberis

    Gan Jiang


    Warms SP Yang and expels interior Cold.

    With Gan Cao, for vomiting and epigastric pain due to SP / ST Xu Cold.

    With Hou Po, for congested Fluids due to Cold with epigastric distention and pain.

    Scl. Poriae Cocos

    Fu Ling


    Promotes urination, resolves Dampness, strengthens SP and harmonizes MJ.

    With Bai Zhu, strengthens SP and resolves Dampness.

    Rz. Atractylodis

    Bai Zhu


    Tonifies SP, tonifies Qi and dries Dampness.

    Fr. Chaenomelis

    Mu Gua


    Strengthens SP, transforms Dampness, promotes urination and harmonizes ST.

    Cx. Magnoliae

    Hou Po


    Moves Qi, transforms Dampness and warms and invigorates SP.

    With Mu Xiang, Da Fu Pi and Cao Guo, descends Qi, relieves stagnation, transforms Dampness and circulates Fluids.

    Rx. Aucklandiae

    Mu Xiang


    Moves Qi and strengthens SP.

    Per. Arecae

    Da Fu Pi


    Moves Qi, promotes urination, expels Dampness and reduces edema.

    Fr. Amomi Tsao-ko Cao Guo 4-30g

    Strongly dries Dampness, disperses Cold and resolves stagnation and distention.

    Rx. Glycyrrhizae (fried) Zhi Gan Cao 2-15g

    Tonifies SP Qi.

    With Sheng Jiang and Da Zao, regulates and harmonizes the other herbs, benefits SP and harmonizes MJ. (cont.)

    Rz. Zingiberis Recens Sheng Jiang 5 slices

    Disperses Cold and warms the middle.

    Fr. Zizyphi Jujube Da Zao 1 piece

    Strengthens SP, tonifies Qi and harmonizes.


Warms Yang, Strengthens SP, Promotes Qi movement and Promotes urination.


    SP Xu Edema

    SP and KI Yang Xu with Water Flooding (Yin edema)

Clinical Manifestations

    Generalized edema, more severe below the waist Heavy sensation of the body

    Absence of thirst

    Scanty urine

    Cold extremities

    Chest and abdominal fullness and distention

    Semi liquid, unformed stools

    Loss of appetite

    T: Pale
    C: Thick and greasy
    P: Deep and slow or Deep and thready


    Pitting edema

    Rheumatic valvular heart disease

    Cirrhosis of the liver

    Chronic enteritis

    Cardiac edema


    Chronic nephritis

    Congestive heart failure

    Chronic hepatic diseases

    Intestinal tuberculosis



    For scanty urination and severe edema:
