Q: My mother has glaucoma. Does that mean I will have it too? Is there anything I can do to avoid glaucoma?


A: Glaucoma is not hereditary disease although high blood pressure does run in the family and it can predispose one to glaucoma. Glaucoma is a condition due to increased pressure inside your eyeballs potentially causing long-term damage to the retina and the optic nerve.

To help prevent glaucoma and maintain healthy function of your eyes, you should:

  1. Have regular eye exams
  2. Keep your blood pressure in check
  3. Eat foods beneficial for your eyes such as carrots, spinach, and blueberries
  4. Take supplements such as fish oil or flax seed oil, lutein, antioxidants like anthocyanosides-rich bilberry, and lycopene
  5. Rest your eyes often and do eye exercises daily

Q: I have terrible bloating for about one week before I get my period. What can reduce the bloating and weight gain?


A: Avoid cold foods, raw foods, vinegar, shellfish, coffee, and other stimulants. At least one week prior to onset of PMS, consume some of the following: ginger, green scallions, fennel, orange peel, spinach, walnuts, cinnamon, and black pepper. Angelica sinensis (dang gui) and Poria (fu ling) are also very good.

Remedies include:

  1. Cook winter melon and azuki beans for 30 minutes in enough water to cover them. Eat this 3 times daily.
  2. Boil tea using the skin of fresh ginger.
  3. Make spinach and pearl barley soup by boiling both in water for 30 minutes.

I suggest you see an acupuncturist/herbalist; these methods are very helpful in alleviating the effects of PMS.
